<image:title>Custom Cabinets and Other Casework - Quilt Chest</image:title>
<image:caption>This custom oak chest was designed and built for a client to display their collection of hand-made quilts. It has a hinged lid for easy loading and unloading and tempered glass panels on three sides so the contained quilts can be displayed. It was designed to compliment the other furniture in the room where it will be displayed. It is 30” wide, 18” deep, and 24” tall. The lid is hinged with special stay-open hinges that do not expose the quilts contained inside to any sharp edges or moving parts.</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Cabinets and Other Casework - Glass Display Cabinet</image:title>
<image:caption>This custom display cabinet was designed specifically for this amazing set of hand carved Western themed chess pieces. It has a mirror back to show off the fine detail of the back sides of the pieces, as well as a mirror bottom shelf to reflect the ambient light allowed into the case from the glass top. It was designed to minimize the rustic Walnut framing, and maximize the glass viewing panels. The front, which has numerous Western themed images carved in relief, is hinged and opens to allow full access to the pieces on display. As an added feature, the glass shelves are made of low iron glass to eliminate the green appearing shelf edges that would be created with standard glass. The cabinet was designed to be displayed on a table or sideboard, as shown here, or mounted on the wall using a built-in heavy duty French cleat system.</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Cabinets and Other Casework - Meld</image:title>
<image:caption>This simple Shaker-inspired wall cabinet is a melding of styles and periods of furniture. Its geometric proportions and prominent design details are purely Shaker, such as the classic profile of the top edge, and the unmistakable Shaker raised panel door. It’s through-mortise and tenon shelf joinery, and proud dovetails, are reminiscent of classic Craftsman style pieces. Representing the modern era of furniture design are some small surprises you can discover for yourself - including the interchangeable decor panels in the cabinet, and the method of opening the drawers. It is made from Quarter sawn cherry with Anigre veneer on the inside of the cabinet back. It is finished with hand-buffed wax over shellac and linseed oil. The cabinet is 16” wide x 32” high x 10” deep.</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Cabinets and Other Casework - Free-Standing Pantry</image:title>
<image:caption>I built this for a client who needed a pantry for her newly remodeled kitchen. It needed to be a specific size to fit in the corner of the room between two windows. She wanted something like a pie safe, but nothing that dated looking. After a couple discussions, and several sketches, we decided on this. It’s a solid cherry piece, designed in the Shaker style. She wanted glass doors, but not just any glass. We selected a designer glass with some subtle ripples and defects. The four shelves are adjustable. It was finished off with a pair of enameled door pulls she had received from a relative. ✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Cabinets and Other Casework - 21st Century Shaker Sewing Desk</image:title>
<image:caption>This contemporary rendition of the classic Shaker sewing desk is making its way to a new home in Arizona, where it will be used for various knitting and other sewing tasks. It has the same overall dimensions as its circa 1880 Shaker cousin, found below on this web site – 38” tall, 28” wide, by 19” deep. Its drawer configuration was changed from the original to meet the needs of the client. Unlike the original Shaker version, the flat panels were replaced with much more contemporary raised panels, which contain decorative profiles on both the panel frames and the fields – something the Shakers would have never done, as they did not believe in unnecessary decoration. The piece was hand-built with a solid hard maple frame and solid maple panels. The drawer boxes are built from white pine, utilizing hand-cut dovetails on all corners. It is finished in a durable polyurethane. </image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Cabinets and Other Casework - Shaker Chimney Cupboard</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece was featured in the Gallery section of the February 2017 issue of Fine Woodworking Magazine. In addition to being a highly functional piece of fine furniture for a small space, this Cherry and Pine Chimney Cupboard is a study in the key design elements of late period Shaker furniture. This tall (73" high), graceful cupboard is 16" wide and 12" deep. It is made of solid Cherry, with Pine used for the drawer boxes and back, and will fit perfectly into a tidy corner of the kitchen or bathroom. Its 3 drawers will store many small items, and the adjustable shelves inside give it great flexibility. The most prominent features of this cupboard are the flat panel doors and the frame and panel back. The use of classic, refined, Shaker knobs is an unmistakable mark of this traditional style of furniture. The door latches, which require a simple clockwise twist to unlatch, are classic Shaker. The understated design of the crown molding at the top was used to give Shaker pieces the feeling of reaching to the heavens. Less often recognized details are the proportions used in Shaker case pieces. There are simple geometric proportions that dominate the design of Shaker casework. These are the ratios of 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 2:3 and 3:4 - all prominent in this piece. Even the placement of the knobs on the doors and drawers conforms to these common proportions. ✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Cabinets and Other Casework - Shaker Sister's Sewing Desk</image:title>
<image:caption>Crafted by hand, this Shaker Sister's Sewing Desk was carefully reproduced from drawings created by Ejner Handberg, a 20th century builder and cabinet maker from Massachusetts. This circa 1880 Shaker sewing desk is made of the same materials available to the Shakers of New England, and incorporates traditional joinery used in Shaker furniture of this period. This reproduction of a piece in the collection of The Shaker Museum at Old Chatham, New York was built as a work station for a Shaker Sister serving as a seamstress in her community. Shaker furniture is noted for its simple, elegant style and utilitarian purpose - clearly demonstrated in the turned bottoms of the legs, the inviting curves of the elegant knobs, and the shear utility of the design providing ready access to all the needs of a Shaker seamstress. Let me hand-build a custom piece of Shaker furniture for you. ✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜</image:caption>

<image:caption>This custom quilt cupboard (34"W x 22"D x 76"H) was made for a client to fit precisely in a specific location in their home. They described the features they wanted - doors and drawers - and the style in which they wanted it built. The style was to match an existing piece in their home. I made it with hand-cut details, and custom hand-scraped moldings to match the existing piece. The large drawers glide effortlessly on a hardwood center guide system - even when full of quilts! Although not apparent in this photograph, the glass in the doors is new "old" glass. It is rippled like glass that is a hundred years old. It gives a charming appearance to the quilts folded inside on display. It is made of solid cherry and cherry veneered furniture-grade plywood, and finished with durable polyurethane. ✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜</image:caption>

Today they are considered highly collectable and command prices typical of treasured furniture classics. This piece is done in natural northern white pine, as was its original. Unlike the original, which was 32” in diameter, this piece is scaled down to side-table proportions. It is 26” in diameter and 24” tall. It’s finished in a durable hand-rubbed polyurethane varnish, and waxed and buffed to a soft, mellow glow. ✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Tables - Drop Leaf Dining Table and Chairs</image:title>
<image:caption>This Shaker dining set was done for a lady who didn’t have a lot of dining space in her apartment. She wanted a high quality table in a specific size, with a pair of matching chairs, and a bench. The table could be only 2 feet deep with the leaves down, and 4 feet with them up. As the chairs needed to be pushed under the table, to get them between the straight tapered legs on the narrow side, they had to be made narrower than standard. The table and chairs are cherry with a dark stain chosen by my client. The curved ladder-back chairs have seats woven with 1” wide classic cotton Shaker tape. This turned out to be an eloquent solution to a small space problem. ✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Tables - Shaker Inspired Table</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspired by a candle stand first created around 1830 by a Shaker craftsman in the community of Hanover, Massachusetts, this solid Cherry table faithfully duplicates the fine lines of its ancestor. It duplicates the original in every detail except for the size of the top. Standing 24-1/2” tall, this classic, graceful table has a 20” diameter top. The original was 18”. It was meticulously crafted by hand using traditional techniques. It was finished and hand-rubbed to a satin sheen, resulting in a velvety touch to the hand. ✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Tables - High-Top Table and Stools</image:title>
<image:caption>I completed this high-top table and stools for a client who needed some casual furniture. The table stands at a 42” height – a conventional height for a high-top. The tall stools sport a generous 18” diameter seat that is gently hollowed to form a most comfortable place for one’s bottom while enjoying their favorite beverage. The base of the table is a reclaimed whiskey aging barrel provided by the clients. It comes from a distillery in Kentucky which makes the clients’ favorite bourbon. I constructed the top and stool seats out of sturdy oak – just like the barrel. The clients provided the stain, so that it would match other furniture in the same space. I had the barrel and stool steel bases fabricated locally and finished with a very durable powder coat finish. I’m certain this set will provide entertainment for many years to come. ✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Tables - Contemporary Table Group</image:title>
<image:caption>This was a new venture for me. I've not done something so contemporary before. This was for a client who needed to fill a large space in a wide open living room. The tables range in size from the small 18" diameter one to a large 48" diameter table. They vary in height between 14" and 23". Each table is separate so they can be moved in the space to create varied designs. The tables have hollow bases topped by 2-1/2" thick tops with a full bullnose edge. they are made of laminated furniture veneers for strength, durability, and low weight. The tables were finished commercially with silver leaf. ✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜✜</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Tables - Dutch/Tuscany Pedestal Dining Table</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a unique table. The sculpted pedestal and base combine the fluid lines of furniture often found in Tuscany, with the Dutch inspired geometric Parquetry pattern of the table top. I built this for a client who had lived in the Netherlands for a period of time and had become fond of a particular pattern of inlaid wood. The pattern shows up much better in the photo below. The table, as well as the bench seats, are made from recycled locally sourced barn wood. The wood species include Ash, White Pine, and Douglass Fir. The pedestal is turned from a solid glued-up block of Yellow Poplar, supported by a base of Baltic Birch. My client wanted to finish this piece themselves, as well as install it in the breakfast nook shown. So, I shipped it to them raw and unfinished. It turned out quite stunning.</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Tables - French Country Writing Desk</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece was a commission for a client who sent me a photo of a desk like this that she had seen. She wanted a custom version of it. She wanted it a bit smaller than the original. This finished piece measures 46" wide by 24" deep, with a 30" high writing surface. In addition, she wanted a commercial finisher to apply the finish with her own version of a French Country finish. Didn't it turn out amazing?! I made this piece for her out of soft maple, which is an excellent hardwood for painted projects. It incorporates all traditional mortise and tenon construction with dovetailed drawers, both on the fronts and backs. Below is a photo of the final piece, in its unfinished stage, show construction details. The drawers feature stops to prevent them from being accidentally pulled all the way out, spilling their contents all over the floor. This heirloom quality piece will likely provide some up and coming author a great inspiration for writing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Tables - Sophisticated Double Pedestal Dining Table</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a commissioned table (44" wide x 76" long) I built for a family who wanted to replace their standard 4-legged table with a pedestal design. They were accustomed to entertaining large groups for diner, and wanted to rid themselves of the interference to seating that table legs can create. The table was designed to complement the style of their existing dining set. I was also able to match the material (hard maple) and the finish. It looks like the table was part of the original dining set. This table has fluted pedestals, and softly curved ends on the top, along with a curved table apron. A remarkable feature of this table is that it accommodates 5 each 21" wide leaves, making the extended length of the table a whopping 181" - that's just over 15'. To ensure this long table does not sag in the center, I designed and incorporated a pair of custom, fold-down legs that hide under the table when not needed. Check out the following photo to see it fully extended. ____________________</image:caption>

<image:caption>Crafted by hand, these authentic Shaker rocker “Three Bears’ Chairs” were carefully reproduced from drawings created by Ejner Handberg, a 20th century builder and cabinet maker from Massachusetts. He studied Shaker furniture in the mid-1900’s and documented hundreds of pieces in detailed scale drawings. This set of chairs was honored in April, 2014 at the 31st annual Northern Woods Exhibition, sponsored by the Minnesota Woodworkers Guild, as recipient of the "Best Traditional Piece" award. They are made of sturdy North American hardwoods, and demonstrate a variety of sizes, back styles, weave colors and patterns of seats and backs of the rockers offered by the Mount Lebanon Shakers. The Papa chair, a “No. 7” slat back, is made from Curly Maple. The “No. 5” tape back chair for Mama, with a comfy padded back, is made from sturdy Sugar Maple, while the milk-painted “No. 3” chair for Baby Bear is made from both American Elm and Sugar Maple. <image:caption>Thais chair was featured in the Gallery section of the November/December, 2014 issue of Fine Woodworking. It is a hand-made exact replica of an 1876 Shaker Rocking Chair, originally made by the Mount Lebanon, New York Shaker Community. It was created from detailed drawings left by Mr. Ejner Handberg. It is made from durable Curly Maple, dyed to a golden aged maple luster, and finished with multiple coats of hand-rubbed shellac, topped off with a coat of dark furniture wax. This is a "No. 7" rocker. It measures 43" tall at the rear posts. The seat is 17" off the floor, 21" wide at the front, 17" wide at the rear, and 19" deep. The arms are 7" higher than the seat. It is an incredibly comfortable seat, woven of 1" wide "Shaker Tape", a woven, heavy-duty cotton tape, with 1" of upholstery foam between the upper and lower woven layers of the seat. <image:caption>This is a hand-made Shaker rocking chair. It is not a true reproduction. It is a custom version, built for a client with special needs. The client had difficulty getting in and out of authentic Shaker rockers. They needed the seat and arms to be higher. While basically a "No. 5" Mount Lebanon rocker, this chair is 3" taller, with the seat raised 3". You'll notice it has an extra set of stretchers, three instead of the traditional two, to ensure it has the strength needed for the extra height. It is made from durable Hard Maple, dyed to a golden aged maple luster, and finished with multiple coats of hand-rubbed shellac, topped off with a coat of dark furniture wax. This is a modified "No. 5" "Tape Back" rocker. It measures 42" tall at the rear posts. The seat is 19" off the floor, 18" wide at the front, 14" wide at the rear, and 17" deep. The arms are 7" higher than the seat. It is an incredibly comfortable seat, woven of 1" wide "Shaker Tape", a woven, heavy-duty cotton tape, with 1" of upholstery foam between the upper and lower woven layers of the seat. <image:title>Custom Heirloom Boxes - Antique Chess Box Reproduction - circa 1860</image:title>
<image:caption>This chess box reproduction was made for a collector of chess sets, for whom I have made several boxes/boards. It is a reproduction of a box made in or around Germany in about 1860. The original was made of ebony and genuine ivory. As there is an international moratorium on the trade of ivory, this box is made from synthetic ivory and real Gaboon ebony veneers. The unique tapered sides of its design present some unique visual interest, and numerous construction challenges. It is lined with billiard cloth.</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Heirloom Boxes - Ornamental Chess Game Box - circa 1760</image:title>
<image:caption>Chess and Backgammon Game Boxes like this have been common for centuries. Long before the invention of the GameBoy this is how individuals carried their entertainment with them. This box is a replica of a circa 1760 box made in southern Germany. It is the first of a series of boxes being make for a collector of chess sets. It is a large box, measuring 20" square and 4-1/2" tall. It was reproduced from photographs of the original, which is in a private collection. Game boxes from this period are extremely rare. This box was made as a replica of its 250 year-old ancestor – preserving the craftsmanship prevalent in that era. Great care was taken in distressing the piece and adding age to the veneers and finish. Every surface of this box, inside and outside, is veneered. The only solid pieces visible are the finely detailed contoured top and bottom edge trim moldings – each carefully shaped with a custom hand tool made for this piece.</image:caption>

<image:title>Custom Heirloom Boxes - Ornamental Chess & Backgammon Game Box - circa 1710</image:title>
<image:caption>This box is the second in a series of reproduction boxes created for a collector of chess sets. It contains not only a chessboard, but a backgammon board inside. Chess and backgammon have a long association. Recognizable forms of each game emerged from neighboring civilizations—chess from India and backgammon from Persia—around the sixth century. One legend from the Persian epic poem “Book of Kings” states that when Indian envoys brought chess to the Persian court, the Persians taught the visitors to play backgammon in return. This box is a replica of a circa 1710 box made in southern Germany. It was reproduced from photographs of the original, which is in a private collection. Game boxes from this period are extremely rare. This box was made for a collector as a replica of its 300 year-old ancestor – preserving the craftsmanship prevalent in that era. Care was taken to replicate the age of the original. Unlike its ancestor, this box has faux ivory inlays – not real ivory.</image:caption>

IO created this for a collector of chess sets, for whom I’ve made several antique reproduction boxes and boards. It is made from Gaboon Ebony and synthetic ivory veneers. The original was made of genuine ivory, but as there is an international moratorium on the trade of ivory, modern synthetic ivory was used for this piece. The tapered sides give it a very unique appearance, and presented some new fabrication challenges. <image:title>Custom Heirloom Boxes - Walnut Storage Box w/ Brass Fittings</image:title>
<image:caption>This premium, solid Black Walnut storage box was commissioned by a client with a special storage need. He needed a strong, attractive hand-crafted box to store and transport heavy, large gauge brass cartridges for an antique firearm. This 9” x 8”x 7” box is constructed of ¾” thick Black Walnut, cut from a branch fork of the tree. This resulted in very dramatic grain patterns on all surfaces of the box. The box corners are fitted with hand-cut dovetail joints. It is finished with a penetrating oil varnish that makes the grain pattern pop for this striking appearance This heavy box, weighing over 2 pounds empty and nearly 5 pounds when loaded, is fitted with high quality brass hardware, including heavy duty quadrant hinges, a solid brass spring catch, and forged brass carrying handle. The interior is partitioned, as shown below, providing individual nesting places for each cartridge. Both the inside bottom and top surfaces of the box are covered with black neoprene foam, trapping the cartridges between them, preventing them from rattling. If you need a box with both style and functionality, I can make it for you!</image:caption>
